Lean Systems 1-day Overview

Course Description
Does your company have one clear definition of lean? Does everyone describe lean the same way? Is lean meaningful to employees or is it just another fad? Too often companies begin lean without defining what lean is or how to get there. Almost like a bad MapQuest encounter, companies spend lots of time driving (i.e. often perceived as chasing waste) without arriving to a competitive advantage. If companies only spent a little time up front defining “true lean” research has shown that organizations would have a 70% greater chance of engaging the workforce and recruiting employees to support it. Unfortunately, most companies do not have ONE voice, or use ONE system in their lean implementation efforts.

The University of Kentucky is partnering with Toyota Motor Manufacturing to teach non-Toyota suppliers “true lean.” This 1-day overview provides participants with a clear destination of lean and how to get there. Participants will learn the types of activities that Toyota tried when they started some 60 years ago and the ways that TPS was used to involve everyone in the organization. This course will cover a variety of different topics including lean philosophies, principles and tools. This course will safeguard participants from some of the most common pitfalls of lean implementation and provide some simple techniques to advance standardization. The course is combined of lectures and discussion, and provides a condensed simulation to demonstrate some of the characteristics of a lean system. Participants from all levels are encouraged to attend. While it’s not always easy to ask for directions, a road map can provide some invaluable direction!
