Most companies are eager to spread lean’s waste reduction methodologies across supply chain in the attempt to lower cost and raise competitiveness. The idea of shorter lead times, 100% on-time delivery, and perfect quality is a buyer’s dream for supplier qualification. Today, there are over 1000 books and articles on how to achieve lean supplier development. Authors and consultants are describing 8-step programs, 13 must-have guiding principles and a whole list of copy cat strategies intended to be your “Way” for supplier development. While most information on the topic is good for bench marking and awareness, companies soon realize that these “self-help cook books” are not universal or able to fit the individual needs of the company. Shockingly, most lean supplier development initiatives fall under the premise that you can give away something you don’t have to do your self…that is to be lean.

The Lean Systems Group in combination with Toyota is offering a 2-day Lean Supplier Development course designed to teach the fundamentals of supplier development. Participants will learn which aspects of “TPS” (Toyota Production System) is applied to suppliers and which systems are not intended to shape supplier development activities. Students will learn how Toyota manages the buyer and supplier relationship, and how activities such as kaizen are expected to occur at an appropriate time in the design cycle. The course will also discuss Toyota cross functional supplier development efforts which are shared by quality, manufacturing, production engineering, design and purchasing. Other aspects of the course will review Toyota’s product development cycle, which is the heart of Toyota’s supplier development process. The main objective of the course is provide participants with a prescriptive image of how Toyota manages tier 1 suppliers in an effort to manage high impact components / parts, through cost reduction and risk minimization.
